Year 10 Transition Week: Preparing for the Future

Year 10 picnic day

Year 10 students had a productive and engaging Transition Week in Week 8, filled with valuable experiences and life lessons to prepare them for the challenges of Year 11 and beyond. The program combined academic prerequisites, life skills, and hands-on learning to help students transition smoothly into their senior years.

A highlight of the week was guest speaker Andy the Barber, who shared inspiring words of wisdom. Andy’s talk encouraged students to stay resilient, pursue their passions, and believe in themselves, leaving a lasting impression on all who attended.

Throughout the week, students also focused on completing their Minimum Standards testing and All My Own Work modules—important prerequisites for starting Year 11. These achievements marked significant milestones in their academic journey.

The week offered a variety of hands-on workshops and skill-building sessions, including:

  • Cooking with Mince: Students showcased their culinary creativity, learning to prepare delicious and versatile meals with mince.

  • Survival First Aid: Students were taught to think outside the box, learning how to manage first aid situations without access to a traditional kit.

  • The World of Digital Media: Mr Cauldfield introduced students to the exciting field of digital media, sparking ideas about future opportunities in media production.

  • Hospitality Skills: From fine dining etiquette to practical skills needed in the hospitality industry, students gained a valuable glimpse into HOSPO careers.

  • Essential Life Skills: Students practiced tying a tie, ironing a shirt, and sewing a button—fundamental skills that will serve them well in both professional and personal life.

On Thursday afternoon, students enjoyed a well-deserved break during Picnic Day at Gaden Trout Hatchery. Working in small groups, students planned their picnics, each member contributing food to share. The result was a feast of BBQ sausage sandwiches, steak sandwiches, fresh fruit, and salads, with standout contributions like Cruz’s delectable homemade cake. Students spent the afternoon playing soccer, throwing frisbees, or simply relaxing on the grass, making it a wonderful way to wrap up a busy week.

Transition Week is just one part of our end-of-year activities designed to help Year 10 students build confidence and gain essential skills for the years ahead. In Week 9, students also completed Work Experience, exploring a variety of industries and gaining firsthand insight into potential career pathways. These opportunities allow students to develop their abilities, discover their passions, and take steps toward life beyond school.

A special thank you to the JHS Careers Department, who coordinates this program each year. Their hard work and dedication ensure that students have access to meaningful experiences that support their growth and development.

We pride ourselves on giving students the best opportunities to succeed, equipping them with the tools, knowledge, and confidence they need to tackle life’s next chapter head-on. We wish all our Year 10 students the very best, whether they are continuing into senior education or leaving school to embark on apprenticeships and other pathways.
