Additional learning support
At Jindabyne High School, we ensure every student is ready to learn. We support students with disabilities and additional learning needs so they can take part in all areas of school life. Students with and without a formal diagnosis can be eligible for additional learning support. Support can begin at any stage of school following a referral and review by the Learning Support Team.
Your child may be offered additional learning support when:
- teachers notice changes in learning or behaviour
- reviewing assessment results and learning progress
- parents and carers raise concerns or ask for support
Learning and support team
Our learning and support team helps make sure every student gets the help they need at the right time. The team works with families, teachers and support staff to:
- understand each student’s needs
- plan adjustments and supports
- monitor progress
- connect with other services if needed.
Our learning and support team includes:
- Head Teacher Inclusive Education
- Learning and Support Teachers
- School Learning Support Officers (SLSOs)
- School Psychologist
Our team draws on a wealth of experience and understanding of students with additional needs. We know that some students need extra support to do their best at school. We work closely with families to create Secondary Adjustment Plans that reflect the needs of the individual student.
Contact us to meet with a member of this team to talk about your child’s strengths, interests and areas where they may need support.
Support that fits your child's needs
Some students need extra support to feel confident and do their best at school. We work closely with families to make support plans and adjustments that suits each child’s needs.
Additional learning support can include:
- teachers and support staff working together with students in the classroom
- Learning Support Teachers working with classroom teachers to tailor programs that cater to the diverse needs of students
- In-class supplementary support
- Small groups tuition and 1:1 intervention for literacy and numeracy
- regular check-ins to review and update the planned supports
- assistive technology
- instructional resources
- extra guidance, simpler content or different focus during lessons
We know when a student needs help when:
- teachers notice changes in learning or behaviour
- reviewing assessment results and learning progress
- parents and carers raise concerns or ask for support.
Adjustments are planned with parents and carers. They are reviewed regularly and changed when needed. If you think your child may need extra help, contact us.
Assessment Adjustments and Exam Provisions
The Learning Support Team understands that some students need flexible methods to access assessment tasks and exams. The team uses evidence drawn from specialist reports, diagnostic testing, functional evidence and collaboration with families to determine what adjustments and provisions are best suited to a student’s needs. These may include:
- more time
- modified tasks
- simplified language
- access to a reader or writer
- breaks during tasks
- small group supervision
- different ways to complete a task (e.g. oral presentations instead of written tasks).
Adjustments are planned with parents and carers. They are reviewed regularly and changed when needed. If you think your child may need extra help, contact us.
Understanding Learning Support in Key Areas
The NCCD is a government initiative that helps schools and education authorities better understand the needs of students with disability and allocate resources accordingly. This fact sheet outlines how data is collected, why it is important, and how it supports inclusive education practices across Australian schools.
We encourage all families to read the information provided in the fact sheet below:
Jindabyne High School is committed to supporting all students to access the HSC exams. Students who receive exam provisions for school-based exams are eligible to apply for HSC Disability Provisions through NESA. Your Learning and Support Team will guide this process, beginning at the start of Year 11.
NAPLAN is a nationwide assessment for students in years 3, 5, 7 & 9 for literacy and numeracy. It is conducted in March of each year and provides rich data that informs teaching and learning. Students with a disability or additional learning needs may be eligible for NAPLAN Disability Provisions. Your learning support team will contact families of students with Secondary Adjustment Plans for consent prior to the testing. If your child does not have a plan and you would like to discuss disability provisions, please contact the school.
