Sport, recreation and physical activity
Sport, Recreation and Physical Activity play an important role in student wellbeing, engagement and personal development at Jindabyne High School. Through a wide range of sporting, recreational and physical activity opportunities, students are encouraged to build confidence, resilience and teamwork while maintaining an active and healthy lifestyle.
Key Programs
Friday Sports Program
All students in Years 7 to 10 are required by the Department of Education and Communities policy to participate in school sport. We hold this every Friday afternoon in Terms 1, 2 and 4. Students are able to select from a range of sports, either team or individual, and from recreational activities to personal fitness programs.
Sports such as Bouldering, Trampolining, Tennis, Pilates, Squash, Lawn Bowls, Dance, Mountain Biking, Walking, Ball-games, Soccer, Basketball, Netball, Volleyball, Acro Airbag ,are available.
Some of these activities are free of charge, whilst others involve a weekly charge.
Snowsports
At Jindabyne High School, we take advantage of our location, offering students the opportunity to participate and/or compete in a variety of snowsports disciplines.
The school runs an optional, comprehensive ski and snowboard development program for students from Years 7 to 10. Skiing and boarding occurs throughout Term 3, and is held every Friday at Perisher and/or Thredbo, with full-day activities and skills development across four disciplines: - alpine, freestyle, snowboard and cross-country skiing. This program is aimed at facilitating the development and involvement of students at intermediate level and above; however, students of lesser ability (beginners) are also catered for.
This program is also a great pathway into a career in the snowsports industry.
JHS also participates in Snow Australia’s Interschools competitions and we encourage all our students to get involved and enjoy being part of the snowsports team alongside their peers.
Many former JHS/JCS students started their competition career through participation at various events including Interschools, and have gone on to represent Australia at World Cup level and at the Winter Olympics.
Mountain Biking
Jindabyne High School is proud to offer a vibrant and growing Mountain Biking program that reflects our unique alpine environment and the passion of our students. Riders of all abilities are encouraged to develop their skills, confidence and resilience through regular training and competition.
Our Friday Sport Mountain Biking program provides students with a weekly opportunity to ride local trails under the guidance of experienced staff and qualified coaches. Students build technical skills, improve fitness, learn trail etiquette and enjoy the social and wellbeing benefits of outdoor recreation.
Each year, our riders also have the chance to represent the school at the Snowy Mountains Interschools Mountain Biking Championships, one of the largest and most exciting school MTB events in Australia. This competition allows students to challenge themselves, showcase their skills and experience high-level racing in a supportive team environment.
Mountain Biking at Jindabyne High School promotes teamwork, persistence and a love of the outdoors, key strengths that carry through to all areas of student life.
How to get involved
Getting involved is simple; students can speak to their classroom teacher, the relevant program coordinator, or visit the front office for further information. Many activities also promote sign-up opportunities through daily notices and assemblies.
We welcome all students to participate, grow their skills, and discover what they can achieve beyond the classroom.
