Ms Worsley, with prior experience in a similar initiative, shared, "Year 12 is a daunting year. However, it can be less challenging with support. That is the intention of the program: more support beyond the classroom can make the demands of the courses easier to navigate."
The Mentor Program pairs each student with a staff member/mentor to ensure they have additional support outside the classroom environment. Mentors can assist in developing better study habits, establishing revision routines, and organising study, work, and social schedules to minimise stress.
The program addresses the students' expressed needs, with organisation and study skills topping the list. With a maximum of two students per mentor, over 20 staff members volunteered to participate in this pilot program, demonstrating the strong commitment of Jindabyne High School's teaching community to student success.
Students and mentors can meet regularly, providing a positive point of contact during a potentially stressful period in their school career. The flexibility of the program allows students to request additional meetings when needed.
Ms Worsley emphasised the importance of the program: "When students feel known and cared for, they can thrive. The program hopes to ensure our Year 12 students at Jindabyne High School do just that: thrive and achieve their personal best in 2024."
The Mentor Program officially commenced on Tuesday, November 14, with a delightful lunch gathering in K Block. Students and mentors connected, discussed goals, and arranged suitable times for ongoing support.
Reflecting on the launch, one student expressed their eagerness, saying, "I would do anything to be able to reduce stress, and mentors were already onto that idea, offering to meet and discuss a plan for the year ahead."
Principal, Mrs Henretty, commended the initiative, stating, "As part of our school's unwavering commitment to high expectations and student wellbeing, the Mentor Program stands as a testament to our dedication to each student's success. We believe that setting ambitious goals should not come at the expense of support. This exciting initiative aligns with our vision for Jindabyne High School, emphasising the importance of fostering an environment where students not only meet but exceed their potential. I cannot thank enough Ms Worsley, Year 12 Year Adviser, and Ms Sewell, Head Teacher Wellbeing, for their outstanding effort in creating and implementing such a worthwhile program. Personally engaging with my mentees on Tuesday, I witnessed firsthand their enthusiasm and positive outlook on the program, further emphasising its inherent value."
The Mentor Program is poised to become an integral part of Jindabyne High School.
